“A Sexy Party in Lockdown” – Being an erotic artist in April and May 2020

On April 4, 2020, after two weeks of lockdown in Paris, where I mostly sketched my cat, I posted the following message to my Facebook page and Instagram story:

Wanna play a game with me? Send me a sexy picture of yourself (nudity optional, sexiness mandatory) and I’ll include it in a big sketch with all the other pics I’ll receive. A literally graphic lockdown sexy party, if you will. So, who’s game? 😉

I had no idea that it would become my biggest project to date, with about 70 people sending me sexy pictures – old friends, party buddies, Instagram followers, fellow rope enthusiasts, members of the Burner community… from Sweden to Sri Lanka, from Britain to Spain, and from all over France. In the end, it took over two A2-size sheets of paper (59 x 42 cm each), and a sizable part of my solitary days. It made me feel connected to my different communities, and started conversations with friends and strangers alike. It was, also, infinitely touching, to be trusted with these most vulnerable of images – not just nakedness, but deeper intimacy, and a rawness of desire, a glimpse of auto-eroticism. Something pure, delicate and strong and alive.

Unsurprisingly, women (or female-presenting folks) were more used to the exercise, both of taking sexy pics, and of thinking of themselves as objects of desire. Men (or male-presenting) were slower to send me photos, but I’m so glad they did. And again, it sparked several thought-provoking discussions with male friends… some of which ended up participating, some not. I feel that it’s a subject worth returning to in the future.

The project was finished as the lockdown started relaxing, during the week of May 11, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting time for that. I have no idea what form real life sexy parties will have to adopt from now on, if they’ll mutate into something else, or just be reckless YOLO affairs, but this one captures the spirit of my month of isolation and desire forever.
